CONT

Comoro Islands: An archipelago or group of islands in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mozambique. On three of its four main islands is the Islamic Federal Republic of the Comoros, and on the fourth, the French Overseas Territory of Mayotte. The main islands are Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Ndzouani (Anjouan), Moili( Mohéli), and Mayotte, (containing the then capital, Dzaoudzi). All the islands except Mayotte voted to become independant (1974) [with Moroni, on Grande Comore Island, as the capital] and unilaterally declared independance (1975). Mayotte remained under French administration.

OBS

Distinguish between the geographical entity, the islands or archipelago named the "Comoros" and the common name of the country officially the "Islamic Federal Republic of the Comoros."
