Le Protérozoïque a été la troisième phase favorable à la formation des minerais, dans des dépressions qui étaient soit proches ou à l'intérieur de systèmes de rifts continentaux, soit en surface. Apparemment ces rifts se sont formés près des marges continentales en l'absence de volcanisme orogénique.
