In conventional reforming, methanol is produced in a two-stage process by reacting a synthesis gas containing hydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO2) over a copper/zinc oxide/alumina catalyst, then separating the product from water and other by-products.
