Le Cosmic cube n'est pas un ordinateur comme les autres. Ses 64 cartes sont strictement identiques et contiennent chacune un petit calculateur comparable à un micro-ordinateur du type IBM-PC. Ses 64 processeurs travaillent ensemble sur certains problèmes qui se prêtent bien à la répartition des calculs fournissant une puissance dix fois supérieure à celle d'un mini-ordinateur tel que Vax de Digital Equipment.

Le Cosmic Cube, commercialisé depuis peu par la firme Intel sous le nom d'IPSC, comporte 32, 64 ou 128 processeurs identiques. Chaque processeur occupe une carte regroupant un microprocesseur, sa mémoire et des circuits assurant les communications.
