La famille des Cricétidés comprend des Rongeurs caractérisés dans l'ensemble, par: - des dimensions en général petites ou moyennes - des formes très variables, tantôt trapues, comme chez les Campagnols, et les Hamsters, tantôt plus élancées - des molaires pourvues de pointes et disposées en deux rangées longitudinales. Ces rongeurs vivent dans les milieux les plus divers. Ils sont répartis sur presque toute la surface du globe, sauf en Australie et dans diverses régions insulaires. Le nombre élevé de leurs espèces en fait la plus vaste famille des Mammifères. Ils comprennent 97 genres et environ 570 espèces.
