An economic evaluation consisting of comparing various options, in which costs are measured in monetary units and outcomes are measured in utility units, usually in terms of utility to the patient (using quality-adjusted life years, for example).

This is a form of cost-effectiveness analysis in which the effectiveness of an option is adjusted on the basis of quality of life.

On voit le plus souvent l’expression coût-utilité avec un trait d’union, mais cette graphie est discutable. En effet, le trait d’union sert à créer une apposition (mot composé) dans un rapport de coordination (avion-citerne) ou de subordination (auto-école), alors qu’en fait il s’agit ici d’une mise en relation : coût par rapport à l’utilité. On peut réduire l’ambiguïté que crée le trait d’union en le remplaçant par une barre oblique, qui marque une relation ou une opposition entre deux éléments. La même logique s’applique à étude cas/témoins, analyse coût/efficacité, etc.
