La représentation graphique de la fonction de répartition est la courbe cumulative. Dans le cas d'une variable discrète, on l'appelle encore courbe en escalier à cause de sa forme: elle présente des marches (ou sauts) aux points d'abscisse [x souscrit i] correspondant aux valeurs possibles de la variable. La fonction de répartition est l'équivalent, pour les variables aléatoires, de la fonction cumulative de fréquence pour les variables statistiques.
