Ainsi, d'un mois au suivant, la variation de l'indice de la production industrielle reflète en partie des influences saisonnières, en partie les mouvements plus fondamentaux de l'activité économique. Le conjoncturiste s'intéresse surtout à ces mouvements. C'est pourquoi il calcule et utilise un indice «désaisonnalisé» : obtenu en soustrayant de l'indice brut une estimation de la composante saisonnière.
