Les traumatismes cardio-aortiques fermés sont de connaissance ancienne [...] En 1919, Jaffet et Sternberg ont fait la relation entre rupture traumatique de l'aorte (RTA) et traumatisme thoracique fermé survenant au cours de violentes décélérations.

OBS

L'aorte est blessée indirectement par écrasement antéro-postérieur de la cage thoracique entre le siège et le volant, et surtout lors des grandes décélérations, dont l'intensité peut être déduite de la vitesse de la voiture au moment de l'accident.
