... a person investigating crimes. It is... a term that may lead to better cooperation between investigative personnel and patrol officers. "Criminal investigator" is a better term than "detective" to describe the men and women in police agencies who pick up crimes unsolved by the patrol forces... The term "detective" appears to emphasize the detection of crime--its discovery--or the detection and identification of persons who have committed crimes. Many detectives and investigators work in civilian dress and therefore are commonly called "plainclothes officers" or "plainclothes men". 1, record 1, English, - criminal%20investigator
