Les surfaces diachroniques sont des surfaces stratigraphiques physiques, indépendantes des surfaces de stratification et qui, souvent, les recoupent. Elles correspondent en général à des surfaces non chronostratigraphiques.

OBS

Ces surfaces sont souvent prises, à tort, pour des surfaces de stratification. Dans l'étude des lignes sismiques, où les réflecteurs sont interprétés comme des surfaces chronostratigraphiques, il ne faut pas oublier la présence assez fréquente de réflecteurs non chronostratigraphiques associés à des surfaces diachroniques (...).
