Apparues au début des années 60, les cellules à enclumes de diamant ont révolutionné les méthodes de travail des géophysiciens en leur permettant de reproduire, en laboratoire, les conditions de température et de pression qui règnent dans les profondeurs de la Terre. Ces cellules se composent de deux enclumes de diamant séparées par un espace d'un dizième de millimètre environ.
