On a coutume d'opposer les signes cliniques aux signes paracliniques, ou avec les résultats d'examens dits complémentaires. Mais que sont les signes cliniques? Sont-ils ceux dont disposerait un médecin (avec son savoir, sa compétence, son expérience) sans autres moyens que ses cinq sens? La vision, le toucher (ou la palpation), l'audition (ou l'auscultation directe), l'odorat, le goût. Il faut bien admettre que les deux derniers ont peu d'importance dans la clinique moderne. L'auscultation (même médiate par le stéthoscope) a pris moins d'importance en cardiologie ou en pneumologie.
