Se utiliza para hallar cuál es el valor actual de 1 en una fecha futura. La expresión es 1 [dividido por] (1 + i)n, en que i = la tasa de interés (tasa de actualización) y n = al número de años. Es el recíproco del factor de interés compuesto para 1. En general se obtiene de un conjunto de tablas de interés compuesto y de descuento. Este factor permite determinar el valor actual de un monto recibido o pagado en el futuro. Al proceso de hallar el valor actual de algún valor futuro se hace referencia en general como actualización. It is not necessary for the plan to reduce the pension on the full actuarial basis. Frequently the early retirement discount factors are not actuarial but arbitrary, such as a reduction of 3 or 6 per cent for each year of early retirement. In the example quoted above, with 3 percent reductions a pension of $1,020 (85% X $1,200) per month would be paid, beginning at age 60. The idea is that the full actuarial discount is simply too severe a reduction for someone who is retiring early and that the cost of lowering the discount factor is a proper and necessary cost of the plan. 1, record 2, English, - early%20retirement%20discount%20factor

Il n'est pas nécessaire que la réduction prévue par le régime équivaille à la pleine réduction actuarielle. Bien souvent, les facteurs de réduction de la rente anticipée ne sont pas actuariels mais arbitraires, par exemple, une réduction de 3 ou 6 pour cent par année d'anticipation.
