Titre de créance émis ou négocié à un prix inférieur à sa valeur nominale lorsque le taux d'intérêt effectif, ou taux de marché, excède le taux d'intérêt nominal de l'instrument, ou encore titre de créance ne portant pas d'intérêt, émis à une valeur inférieure à sa valeur à échéance, l'écart tenant lieu d'intérêt. Dans ce dernier cas, on pourrait parler d'instrument à intérêts.

OBS

En France et en Belgique, l'instrument à escompte s'appelle «instrument à prime». Le terme «prime» est employé pour désigner la différence au moment de l'émission, sur le marché primaire; pour le marché secondaire, on emploie plutôt le terme «décote».
