[Appareil constitué d'un tube de 2 m de longueur, large de 10 cm. Dans ce tube pend un plateau suspendu à un fil accroché au fléau d'une balance. L'appareil est réglé pour que le bras de la balance permette de tracer directement la courbe cumulative de 4 g de matériel. On emploie de l'eau débarrassée de ses ions calcium dans un adoucisseur; le cadran sur lequel on enregistre les déviations du fléau de la balance est gradué directement en pourcentage du poids. La grande longueur du tube indique que cet appareil est destiné à la granulométrie des sables.
