Plusieurs dictionnaires de langue française établissent une distinction entre «bétail» et «bestiaux». Par exemple, le terme «bestiaux» est défini par le Trésor de la Langue Française informatisé comme étant l'«ensemble d'animaux de ferme, à l'exception des animaux de basse-cour, considérés comme une somme d'individus par opposition au bétail, qui en désigne le total». Malgré ce fait, il semble que dans l'usage, on ne fasse pas cette distinction.
