En toponymie, on élide la particule de liaison devant «Halifax» bien qu'on ne le fasse pas devant le titre de noblesse «comte de Halifax». Dans «Noms et lieux du Québec», 1994, page 266, la Commission de toponymie explique l'origine des noms des «municipalités d'Halifax-Nord et d'Halifax-Sud», du «canton d'Halifax», de la «municipalité du canton d'Halifax-Nord», de la «paroisse de Saint-Ferdinand-d'Halifax» et d'«un bureau de poste répondant au nom d'Halifax» comme pouvant «commémorer George Montagu Dunk, second comte de Halifax (1716-1771), qui s'est activement occupé de commerce avec l'Amérique».
