Des forces poussent et tirent continuellement sur les roches qui se plissent et s'étirent progressivement, jusqu'à ce que ces forces soient plus grandes que la résistance des roches. C'est alors que ces roches se brisent ou changent brusquement de position. Ce déplacement soudain crée des vibrations ou ondes sismiques. Et ce sont ces vibrations qui font trembler la Terre lorsqu'elles atteignent la surface.
