Les Mélano-Fidjiens parlent le fidjien, mais celui-ci est fragmenté en deux variétés principales : le fidjien occidental (env. 56 000 locuteurs) et le fidjien oriental (27 000 locuteurs). C’est cette dernière variété qui a été adoptée comme la langue officielle de l’archipel. Par ailleurs, chacune des deux grandes variétés de fidjien se divisent elles-mêmes en plusieurs formes dialectales.
