An eclipse season is one of only two periods during each year when the Sun, the Moon and Earth are aligned, allowing eclipses to occur. Each season lasts about 35 days and repeats just short of six months later!

Pour qu'une éclipse soit possible, la nouvelle lune ou la pleine lune doit avoir lieu lorsque la Lune se trouve près d'un des deux endroits, appelés «nœuds», où son orbite croise celle de la Terre. La ligne des nœuds de l'orbite lunaire pointe alors approximativement en direction du Soleil. Ces périodes favorables surviennent deux fois par année pendant quelques semaines : ce sont les saisons d'éclipses, qui se décalent d'environ 19 jours d'une année à l'autre.
