La Terre tourne sur elle-même autour d'un axe de rotation qui n'est pas perpendiculaire à l'écliptique. Cet axe, en effet, qui «perce» la Terre aux deux p les géographiques, Nord et Sud, est incliné de 23° 27' sur la direction perpendiculaire à l'écliptique. Cette inclinaison forme un angle appelé «obliquité de l'écliptique» et est responsable des saisons.
