La mer échange de la chaleur avec l'atmosphère par contact. La chaleur cédée (ou reçue) par la mer est fonction du gradient vertical de température dans l'air : K: coefficient de conductivité thermique de l'air, Cp : chaleur spécifique de l'air à pression constante. Si l'air est stationnaire, la conduction est due aux mouvements aléatoires des molécules et K est la conductivité thermique moléculaire (caractéristique de l'air à une température donnée).
