[A] "shutter" used in high speed still photography giving exposures of the order of I/200,000,000 second [which consists] of a glass cell fitted with electrodes and filled with nitrobenzene placed between two crossed polarisers.

Passage of about 20,000 volts through the electrodes allows light to pass through the system.
