In 1997, after being diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig's disease, Elizabeth MacFarlane Grandbois became an international advocate and spokesperson for ALS. In an effort to raise awareness and generate funding for research, improved care facilities and equipment, Mrs MacFarlane Grandbois spearheaded Elizabeth's Concert of Hope, held annually since 2001.
