En 1965, le Comité OMS d'experts de l'onchocercose a estimé qu'il fallait fixer 3 degrés d'endémicité selon la prévalence, en pourcentage, de porteurs de microfilaires dermiques d'Onchocerca volvulus dans la population prise comme échantillon : - endémicité forte, 67 % et plus; - endémicité moyenne, de 34 à 66 %; - endémicité faible, 33 %et moins.
