The "epoch of reionization" is a period in the history of the universe that likely arose as a result of the arrival of the first stars and galaxies. Prior to this, the universe was dark, suffused with a dense, obscuring fog of primordial gas. As the first stars switched on, their ultraviolet energy began to reionize the cosmos, punching ever-larger holes in their murky surroundings.

Now the generally accepted designation for all unconventional recovery processes which can be separated into three major categories, i.e. thermal processes, chemical processes and miscible displacement processes.

Processes developed to increase recovery from reservoirs considered depleted by secondary recovery methods of waterflooding or gas injection were termed "tertiary recovery"; but the name was illsuited for recovery from reservoirs which would not respond to secondary recovery methods; this prompted introduction of the term "enhanced oil recovery."
