Areas of chromatin in the interphase nucleus where the chromosomes have uncoiled to the extent that they appear clear by light microscopy, in contrast to the denser heterochromatin. It is presumed to represent the active region of the chromosome material.

Substance dont sont formées les régions des chromosomes qui sont qualifiées d'euchromatiques par opposition aux régions hétérochromatiques. Les segments euchromatiques sont caractérisés cytologiquement par le fait qu'ils sont décondensés pendant les interphases et ne se condensent par spiralisation qu'au moment des mitoses ou des méioses. Ils deviennent alors facilement colorables par les colorants de la chromatine. Les segments hétérochromatiques présentent le comportement inverse.
