ESA planned study of a lunar lander. Would be carried out with participation of eight European space companies. Coordinated in ESTEC by Mr Wubbo Ockels. Estimated cost : $400 million.

Le même jour, les médias annonçaient le départ prochain d'une sonde de l'ESA, qui devrait se poser sur le Pic de la Lumière éternelle, près d'un éventuel lac de glace. En fait, le programme Européen est bien antérieur à ces effets d'annonce. Ce projet, baptisé Euromoon 2000, fut en effet lancé en 1994. Son but ultime, après une série de missions est « la création d'une infrastructure d'exploitation de la Lune tout en préservant les atouts de cette dernière ».
