Selon la source «Routes et transports, vol. XVIII, n° 4/Hiver, 1988, p. 50», le professeur Aïtcin de l'université de Sherbrooke, désigne les bétons à hautes performances de résistance supérieure à 150 MPa (bétons exceptionnels) par l'expression «bétons à très haute résistance de classe IV».

À l'heure actuelle, ce type de béton n'est fabriqué qu'en laboratoire, à l'aide de granulats artificiels.
