Located in a sparsely inhabited region of southern Canada, the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) is relatively unaffected by external human influences and industrial activities. As such, it serves as a natural laboratory for the study of physical, chemical and biological processes and interactions operating on an ecosystem spatial scale and a multi-year time scale.

Dans la région des lacs expérimentaux, on a réservé un certain nombre de lacs et de bassins hydrographiques à des études de manipulation de lacs entiers. L'établissement, qui existe depuis 1968, offre aux scientifiques et aux biologistes l'occasion unique d'effectuer des expériences dans la nature plutôt qu'en laboratoire. De petits lacs sont mis à leur disposition pour tester à pleine échelle des hypothèses sur les écosystèmes d'eau douce. Profitant de constructions permanentes qui abritent des laboratoires modernes, des quartiers d'habitation et des services de soutien, la communauté scientifique est en mesure de s'installer pour une campagne complète d'études sur le terrain, avec la possibilité de travailler sur place l'année durant.
