Fabriqué à partir d'huile végétale ou de graisse animale par procédé de transestérification. Les esters méthyliques sont fabriqués principalement à partir d'huile de colza ou de mélange d'huiles de colza, soja ou encore palme. Les esters méthyliques peuvent être incorporés à hauteur de 5 % dans le diesel sans adaptation du véhicule. Ils peuvent également être utilisés comme carburant pur, mais uniquement sur véhicules spécifiquement adaptés.
