Pour réaliser des opérations multibandes, on utilise souvent des données projetées dans un espace spectral plutôt que dans un espace géographique. Dans un espace spectral, le système de coordonnées est déterminé par le nombre de bandes projetées et leur résolution radiométrique. On fait souvent appel à cette représentation en deux ou en trois dimensions pour élaborer des clés d'interprétation des données multibandes.
