A black magnetic iron oxide found in nature as magnetite, also obtained synthetically (as from iron by heating in steam or from a ferrous salt and an alkali by precipitation and oxidation), and used chiefly as a pigment and a polishing compound but also as a catalyst, in magnetic inks, in metallurgy, in ferrites for the electronic industry and in coatings for magnetic tapes.

Composés du fer. [...] L'oxyde magnétique Fe3O4, ou oxyde salin, constitue la pierre d'aimant naturelle; on l'obtient artificiellement par combustion du fer ou par action de la vapeur d'eau.
