A un moment donné de l'évolution des peuplements (une trentaine d'années chez le hêtre et une quarantaine chez le chêne), les qualités futures de ces tiges deviennent incontestables et leur "croissance en forme" (c'est-à-dire l'acquisition de leur "forme forestière", par élagage) est presque terminée. On procède alors au choix des arbres susceptibles de constituer le peuplement final, dits "arbres de place" [...] Les autres tiges constituent le "peuplement d'accompagnement", qui reste l'objet d'éclaircies sélectives, de manière à y recruter éventuellement un "remplaçant" si un arbre de place se trouvait accidenté.
