Il faut être le plus efficace possible et surtout éviter le «flash-over». C'est-à-dire, le retour de flammes, voire l'explosion suscitée par un appel d'air soudain dans une pièce confinée et embrasée. Pour cela, les soldats du feu commencent par vaporiser le plafond pour refroidir les gaz chauds. Une fois la manœuvre terminée, il faut s'attaquer au cœur du foyer pour l'éteindre rapidement et éviter de tout noyer.
