The first (oldest) appearance of a species in the geologic record.

CONT

One of the things that paleontologists try to do is to identify the age at which a species first evolves (this is called the FAD; the First Appearance Datum) and the age at which a species dies off (the LAD; last appearance datum). The time between the FAD and the LAD of a species is considered its Biozone.

FADs represent the geologically oldest fossil of a particular species that has yet been discovered.

Cette rapidité d'expansion contraste avec l'échelonnement de l'extinction des espèces en déclin, qui permet de suivre leur parcours paléobiogéographique et signaler avec précision leur centre d'extinction; et (ii) des données biostratigraphiques, qui montrent la préférence habituelle des biostratigraphes pour les événements d'apparition des espèces (FADs = first appearance datum) pour fixer des limites géochronologiques aussi brèves que possible, au lieu des événements d'extinction (LADs = last appearance datum) généralement considérés plus fréquemment diachrones.

L'espèce peut être considérée comme l'unité de base en biostratigraphie et comme tout autre unité naturelle elle comporte une limite inférieure, une limite supérieure et une épaisseur. L'enchaînement vertical des espèces est ainsi caractérisée par : apparition = FAD «First Appearance Datum» (limite inférieure); durée de vie = extension verticale (épaisseur); disparition = LAD «Last Appearance Datum» (limite supérieure).
