Si la production d'enzymes cellulolytiques est assez répandue dans la nature (microorganismes et plantes), rares sont actuellement les sources d'enzymes permettant d'envisager un développement industriel de cette production. De fait, la plupart des procédés étudiés actuellement à l'échelle préindustrielle, utilisent les enzymes produits en fermentation submergée par le champignon Trichoderma reesei. Cet ascomycète présente en effet l'avantage d'excréter en grandes quantités le mélange adéquat d'enzymes permettant l'hydrolyse aussi bien de celluloses amorphes que de celluloses fortement cristallines.
