FORD WORLD CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS [1 record]

Record 1 2011-07-18

English

Subject field(s)

  • Curling
DEF

A generic for each of the two world championships in this sport: the "World Men's Curling Championship" first organized in 1959, and called the "Silver Broom" from 1968 to 1985; and the "World Women's Curling Championship" first organized in 1979, and also called the "World Ladies' Curling Championship."

OBS

In his English-French Glossary of Curling Terms of 1986, on page 23E, Pierre Dallaire writes: "Brier: A term reserved exclusively to the men's curling championship held annually in Canada before 1968 and, since 1986, to the Men's World Curling Championship [SIC]". Nevertheless, none of the sources consulted links the term "Brier" to the "World Men's Curling Championship," all of them considering that it has been exclusively associated, since 1927, with the "Canadian Men's Curling Championship."

OBS

The expression can also be a generic for the World Senior Men's Championship or the World Senior Women's Championship.

DEF
