À l'origine (vers 1968), l'assiette à tarte que l'on utilisait pouvait porter le nom de «soucoupe volante» ou d'«assiette volante». Puis, on en a modifié la forme, repliant les bords vers l'intérieur pour lui permettre de prendre dans le vent et de planer, et changé le matériau, remplaçant le métal par un plastique très léger. L'objet s'est ainsi apparenté au «disque» que lancent les athlètes lors des épreuves de lancer du disque; «disque volant» apparaît donc aujourd'hui comme l'équivalent le plus approprié. 4, record 1, French, - disque%20volant
