A direction for rapid scales played on the pf. [pianoforte] or harp, not by fingering, but by sliding over the keys or strings.... A G. effect can also be obtained on string instruments by sliding the finger along the string or by a voice by scooping, but in both cases the direction for this is more properly portamento.

Procédé d'exécution vocale ou instrumentale, qui consiste à faire entendre avec rapidité tous les sons possibles compris entre deux notes (...) Il s'obtient sur les instruments en glissant un doigt sur une seule corde (violon, guitare), sur une partie de clavier (clavecin, piano), sur une série de cordes voisines (harpe), en faisant varier rapidement la tension de la peau (timbales) ou la longueur du tube (trombone).
