An unofficial designation for the inhabited lands stretching along the southwest and northwest coasts of Lake Ontario. Désignation non officielle des terres en forme de fer à cheval qui bordent l'extrémité ouest du lac Ontario et qu'occupent en succession les villes de St. Catharines, Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Lakeview, le Grand Toronto (Mississauga, Etobicoke, Brampton, Vaughan, York, North York, East York, Markham, Scarborough et Toronto), et Oshawa. De même, il est inexact de rendre «Golden Horseshoe Area» par «péninsule du Niagara» ou par «région du Niagara», les territoires couverts n'étant pas les mêmes. Le «Golden Horseshoe» borde l'ouest du lac Ontario. De forme rectangulaire, la péninsule du Niagara s'étend depuis les rives sud-ouest du lac Ontario jusqu'aux rives nord-est du lac Érié et est bornée à l'est par la rivière Niagara, marquant à ce point la frontière entre le Canada et les États-Unis; elle est réputée pour ses vignobles et ses vergers.
