To overcome pulse-spreading many of today's [optical] fibers have a core whose refractive index is graded, or shaped, to compensate for the different distances the rays travel. In such fibers the refractive index decreases with radial distance away from the center. ... Graded-index fibers now being tested in the field reduce this dispersion by a factor of 25 ... 4, record 1, English, - graded%2Dindex

2, record 1, French, - %C3%A0%20gradient%20d%27indice
