Acids are divided more or less distinctly into two categories, hard and soft, with a few intermediate cases. Hard acids are of low polarizability, small size, and high positive oxidation state.

OBS

Qualitativement, il préfère s'associer à des bases dures plutôt qu'à des bases molles. Par exemple, il s'associe aux bases dures possédant des sites basiques O ou N, plutôt qu'aux bases analogues portant des sites S ou P. Réciproquement, un acide mou possède un centre accepteur de forte polarisabilité et manifeste un comportement inverse quant à son aptitude à la coordination. Il n'existe pas de grandeur quantitative pour exprimer ces préférences.
