Fixateurs tannants. Durant le cours de l'été, et chaque fois que les négatifs sont manipulés fréquemment, ou traités ultérieurement dans une solution acide, il est prudent de durcir la gélatine et d'élever son point de fusion dans les liquides chauds. Pour cela, on fait agir sur elle un corps produisant un effet comparable au tannage du cuir. Le corps communément employé est un alun (alun ordinaire ou alun de chrome).
