Every year, thousands of Canadians receive transplants of solid organs, stems cells and pancreatic islet cells. End-stage renal, liver, lung, heart, pancreatic and small intestine failure can be treated by organ replacement. For cancer, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation can be a cure.

Hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation is used primarily for hematologic and lymphoid cancers, but also for many other disorders.

La greffe de cellules souches hématopoïétiques (GCSH) est utilisée pour traiter un certain nombre d'affections malignes et non malignes [...] La greffe permet d'administrer un traitement hautement myéloablatif de chimiothérapie avec ou sans radiothérapie (normalement létale pour la moelle osseuse), en vue de détruire les cellules tumorales sans se soucier de la toxicité hématologique qui sera contrebalancée par la transfusion de cellules souches hématopoïétiques. En général, ce traitement est administré en cas de maladie chimiosensible.
