L'un des points cruciaux pour la recherche était la très attendue autorisation de travailler sur les cellules souches embryonnaires humaines (hES). Ces cellules isolées à partir de la masse interne de blastocystes (et provenant donc, stricto sensu d'embryons), auraient vraisemblablement des propriétés de pluripotence comme leurs homologues murins, et seraient ainsi capables de donner origine à tout type cellulaire.
