Dans la plupart des méthodes de couverture comportant l'emploi de ces émulsions, on préconise un processus initial identique. Il consiste à appliquer, sur la plate-forme du toit ou sur l'isolant de la couverture, une chape de base constituée par un feutre recouvert d'asphalte. L'adhérence est obtenue par l'emploi d'asphalte chaud ou froid.
