Les eaux naturelles faiblement concentrées en oxygène dissous (2 mg/L et moins), sont nuisibles à plusieurs espèces aquatiques; on qualifie ces eaux d'hypoxiques. [...] La superficie couverte par les eaux hypoxiques de l'estuaire du Saint-Laurent est d'environ 1000 km²; le pourcentage de saturation en oxygène y est d'à peine 15%. Le présent projet de recherche a pour but d'examiner les causes probables des faibles teneurs en oxygène des eaux profondes du chenal laurentien.
