Trafic des brise-glaces. Quand le bâtiment passe à travers la glace, les morceaux de banquise environnants se brisent et dérivent dans le sillage du bateau. Une accumulation de hummocks, de taille et de concentration différentes, couvre le chenal ainsi creusé. La durée d'ouverture du passage est tributaire du type de glace brisée par le bateau. Par exemple, dans la banquise côtière, le chenal se refermera rapidement (à quelques longueurs du bateau).
